Mission Variety
Rootless moves beyond simple elimination objectives. Engage in diverse tactical scenarios including Plant and Defend, Escort, Heist, Resource Retrieval, and Territory Control. Every contract demands a unique strategic approach, ensuring no two encounters feel the same.
The Campfire Phase
Traditional XP grinding is replaced by a strategic preparation system. Before each mission, your party gathers at the campfire to consume meals that buff specific stats for the job ahead. Eat for agility to handle stealth operations, or feast for fortitude to survive prolonged sieges. Foraging and inventory management become essential tools of war.
Adaptive Skill Mastery
Characters are defined by their actions, not rigid classes. Equip any skill learned from allies, enemies, or mentors. Mastery is earned through usage: the more a skill is employed in the heat of battle, the more potent it becomes, allowing for organic growth and limitless build customization.
A Living, Breathing Woodland
The forest is a dynamic ecosystem of competing factions. The contracts you accept directly influence the regional balance of power. Your successes and failures ripple through the woodland, determining which powers rise and which fall.
Deep Simulation & "Tags"
Every unit is governed by a complex web of "Tags" derived from their species, equipment, environment, and history. These tags drive both tactical mechanics (e.g., a Wet unit taking more Shock damage) and narrative reactivity, creating a deeply simulated world.
Persistent Relationships
Combat is personal. Battles feature named NPCs who remember your actions. Mercy, cruelty, and aid are tracked and referenced across the campaign. A spared enemy may return as a debt-bound ally, while a humiliated rival may hunt you down.
