How to Play

ShutterClash is a digital card battle game where you use your device camera to capture "sprites" hiding in everyday objects to create cards, build a deck, and battle other trainers for victory!

1. Capture

To capture a new card and discover hidden Sprites around you:

  • Navigate to the "Cards" page.
  • Click the camera button in the top right.
  • Select either "Camera Capture" or "Select From Gallery":
    • Camera Capture allows you to use your device camera to take a photo - this will require camera permissions.
    • Select From Gallery allows you to select a previously taken photo.
    • Crucial Rule: You must select a photo featuring an inanimate object - animals and humans are too scary for Sprites to hang around!
  • Once a photo is selected, click "Capture" to start the Sprite scanning process.
    • Your photo will be scanned using advanced digital vision algorithms to identify the primary object and check if any Sprites are inhabiting it!
    • If a Sprite is found, its type, characteristics, and stats will be derived, and your photo will be turned into a digital battle card - this process takes about 20 seconds.
  • When the capture process completes, select your new card's characteristics and add it to your collection!
    • You will be provided with two options, either of which will affect your card's final stats. Once added to your collection you won't be able to change the card's characteristics, so choose wisely!

2. Deck Building

To build a competitive battle deck to face opponents in the arena:

  • Navigate to the "Decks" page.
    • If you haven't started a deck yet, you'll be prompted to name your first deck.
  • On the left side are 10 slots:
    • Five Tier 1 slots
    • Three Tier 2 slots
    • Two Tier 3 slots
  • On the right side is a list of all cards in your collection that have not been placed in a deck.
  • Drag a card from the right side to the appropriate tier slot on the left to add the card to your deck.
  • Click "Save".
[WARNING] You won't be able to use a deck in battle until you've filled all 10 slots - exactly five Tier 1, three Tier 2, and two Tier 3 cards.

3. Battle Encounters

Once you have a fully populated 10-card deck, test your skills in combat:

  • Navigate to the "Battle" page.
  • Select "Encounter".
  • A random opponent and deck will be constructed to face you. Select one of your saved decks to start the battle.

Battle Rules

  • Starting Hand: At the start of the battle, each opponent shuffles their deck and draws the top 3 cards.
  • The Duel Intro: Each opponent selects a card from their hand in secret and reveals them; the fastest card (highest Speed stat) will stay in play as the first defender.
    • The slower card returns to the owner's hand.
    • If the speed stats between both played cards are tied, a winner is chosen at random.
    • If the winning card was a Tier 2 or Tier 3 card, the owner must immediately discard cards to play it (1 card for Tier 2, 2 cards for Tier 3).
  • Turns: Once the battle starts, opponents alternate turns as Attacker and Defender.

Defender

If you are the defender, your active card stays in play in the middle of the screen. The attacker plays cards from their hand to weaken your defending card until its health (HP) is reduced to 0.

Attacker

  • Select a card from your hand to attack the opponent's defending card.
    • To play a stronger card, you must discard cards from your hand as a cost: discard 1 card for Tier 2, or discard 2 cards for Tier 3.
  • Once an attacking card is deployed, the two cards clash:
    • Speed Priority: The faster card (higher Speed) attacks first, subtracting its Attack value from the target's Health. If the speed stats between both cards are tied, one of the two cards is chosen at random to go first.
    • Type Strengths: Type matching multiplies damage:
      • Strong type matchups deal 1.5x damage
      • Weak type matchups deal 0.75x damage
    • Response Attack: If the defending card survives the initial attack, it immediately strikes back.
      • Speed Counter-Attack Exception: If the defending card is faster than the attacking card, the attacking card will always get to do one round of damage to the defender, even if it is defeated first. If this counter-attack would destroy the defending card, it is instead reduced to exactly 1 HP.
    • This combat phase continues back-and-forth until one of the cards is eliminated.

> END OF COMBAT DRAW: After each battle, the attacking player draws back up to 3 cards in their hand (assuming cards are remaining in their deck database).

Fatigue

For each round that the defender stays in play, they suffer a fatigue penalty - 10% of each stat is reduced. A defender cannot be reduced to 0 health this way.

Victory Condition

Battles continue until an opponent cannot play any cards from their hand. That player loses the battle.

4. Tournaments

Tournaments are opportunities for you to face tough foes in order to gain resources to upgrade your cards!

  • When you start a tournament, you will be faced with 6 opponents.
  • Intel Gathering: You can preview an opponent's Tier 3 cards from their deck by clicking the 👁 button - use this information to gain an edge in battle!
  • Select an opponent and your deck to start a battle! If you are victorious, you will gain resources based on the opponent's Tier 3 cards, and that opponent will be marked as defeated.

5. Upgrades

Upgrades allow you to level up your captured cards and improve one of their three stats.

  • Navigate to the "Cards" page.
  • Select a card:
    • If you have the required resources to upgrade the card, an "upgrade" button will appear in the bottom left of the card image.
    • Resource requirements: Tier 1 cards require 3 resources, Tier 2 cards require 5 resources, and Tier 3 cards require 7 resources.
  • Click the "upgrade" button on the card.
  • Select one of the three stats - Attack, Health, or Speed - to increase its stats:
    • Depending on the tier of the card you are upgrading, the stat will be increased by 5, 10, or 15 points for a Tier 1, 2, or 3 card.
  • Click "Upgrade" to lock in your choice.

Upgrade Stat & Resource Matrix
